Monthly Spotlight December 2022: The Jed Foundation

For our last spotlight of the year, this December we chose to highlight The Jed Foundation. The Jed Foundation was founded in 2000 after Donna and Phil Satow lost their youngest son, Jed, to suicide. Donna and Phil Satow said  “In 1998, we lost our youngest son, Jed, to suicide. Although suicide was and continues to be a leading cause of death among young adults, schools had no uniform model for preventing suicide on campus. Communities struggled to overcome the shame and secrecy that prevented honest discussion of mental health. In 2000, we founded The Jed Foundation (JED) to surmount these hurdles and launch a blueprint for prevention.” Today, The Jed Foundation is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization that is dedicated to support and protect the mental health of our nation’s teens and young adults. To do this, they provide high school and college students skills, support, resources and education as well as to their families while acknowledging and recognizing the challenges that can come as a student. Jed continues to break the barriers of the current mental health care of teens and young adults by putting in place systems, programs and policies  at high schools, colleges, and universities.  “Jed empowers teens by building resiliency and life skills, promoting social connectedness, and encouraging help-seeking and help-giving behaviors.” Just like Jed, we at Ride The Wave envision a future where mental health is recognized as a part of general health care while also supporting and equipping teens and young adults to navigate mental health challenges- to reduce the risks of substance misuse and suicide.  Join us, as we support The Jed Foundation in everything they do and to break the current stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness.
