Monthly Spotlight October 2022: Sad Girls Club

For our October spotlight we chose to highlight Sad Girls Club and its founder Elyse Fox. Sad Girls Club is a nonprofit organization “that is committed to de-stigmatizing mental wellness for millennial and gen-z women, girls, and “femmes” of color.” Sad Girls Club was created by fellow mental health advocate Elyse Fox who created the organization after releasing a documentary in 2017 about her life with depression. After the release of the film, young women all over the world felt connected to her story and sought guidance for their own struggles, as they had similar struggles as well. She used her own story to create a platform and resource for these young women. Sad Girls Club is now dedicated to de-stigmatizing conversations surrounding mental health, providing mental health services to girls who do not have access to therapy and treatment, and creating safe spaces to build community for young women to let them know that they are not alone. Since 2017, they have provided over 250 hours of free therapy and currently host free online group counseling for Sad Girls Club community members. We are inspired by Elise Fox and her impact as well as Sad Girls Club. We at Ride The Wave understand the importance of therapy and that it isn’t always accessible and we give credit to Sad Girls Club for filling in those gaps in mental health care. And lastly, we fully support them in the work they are doing and continue to do.
